1 Corinthians 14:2 For one who speaks in an unknown tongue does not speak to people but to God; for no one understands him or catches his meaning, but by the Spirit he speaks mysteries secret truths, hidden things. (AMP)

1 Corinthians 14:2 If you praise Him in the private language of tongues, God understands you but on one else does, for you are sharing intimacies just between you and him. (MSG)

The 4 Types of Tongues 

1. Tongues of Men (Public) 

Acts 2:7 They were completely amazed. How can this be? They exclaimed. These people are all from Galilee, and yet we hear them speaking in our native Languages! (NLT) 

1 Corinthians 14:22 Therefore tongues are a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe. 

2. Tongues and Interpretations (Public)

3. Personal Prayer (Private) 

1 Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

Romans 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
